CZUMA, Walerian (Major General)

Major General Walerian Czuma.

Walerian Czuma was born 24th December 1890

Served in the 2nd Legionary Brigade he took part in WWI, and was wounded at the battle of Polska Gora 4th August 1916, he was also one of the organisers of the Polish Siberian Brigade. Commanding Officer for the Defence of Warsaw in September 1939. POW in Murnau, Johannisbrunn and Doessel.

After the war he settled in the United Kingdom and worked on a co-operative farm in Cobalder near Peterborough. From 1956 he was a resident of the Polish Hospital in Penley.

He was awarded the following decorations:

  • Order of Virtuti Militari.
  • Cross of Independance with Swords.
  • Cross of Valour and 3 bar.
  • Order of the Rebirth of Poland.
  • Gold Cross of Merit and Legion d’Honneu.

Walerian died at POLISH HOSPITAL PENLEY 7th May 1962, aged 71 years.

Walerian’ grave is alongside his brother Wladyslaw who died at POLISH HOSPITAL PENLEY 4th October 1968, aged 75 years, both were exhumed and repatriated to Krakow, Poland.
