Edward Rowland was born about 1818 he was the son of Edward Rowland , a druggist and Mary, in 1829 his father died and Mary took over the running of the business. In 1841 Mary was in High Street, she was aged 40, also there are Thomas 20, druggist journeyman, Edward 20 same occupation, Emma 20, Samuel 15, and William 15.
These are not their correct ages as in 1841 ages were rounded down to nearest 5 years, so Edward was as we know more likely to be 23. Also no relationships are given.
On 2 February 1850 Edward married Eliza Edisbury in St Philips, Liverpool. Eliza was the daughter of Thomas Edisbury, brewer (deceased) The witnesses were Henry and Emma Edisbury who were her siblings.
Thomas Edisbury died in 1846 , in his will he names his wife as Charlotte, and his children were, John Edisbury, bookseller of London, Eliza, William, Henry, James, Thomas and Emma who were all under 25. He asks that his trustees shall not carry on the currying business any longer than necessary, but empowers them to carry on with the brewing business for the benefit of his children. So it seems Thomas was in the leather trade as well as the brewing business. Charlotte Edisbury died in 1876 aged 83.
By 1853 Edward and Eliza were in Adelaide. Their first child Eliza was born 8 February 1853 at Kensington, Adelaide, but she died aged 22 months on 7 December 1854 in Kensington.
Another child, Edward Edisbury Rowland was born 14 December 1854, Kensington, Adelaide. This was just a week after their first child died.
David Rowland was born on 21 June 1859 and died aged only 5 months on 20 November 1859. He is buried in West Terrace Cemetery, Adelaide.
Back in 1854 there was an announcement in the Adelaide Observer dated 15 April 1854. William Edisbury, formerly of Wrexham, North Wales but latterly in the employ of Alexander Busby Esq of Cassiles, NSW or anyone knowing of his where abouts , he or they would much oblige by sending a line to the undersigned, his friends being very anxious about him. Edwd. Rowland, Rundle St, Adelaide.
Whether William got in touch isn`t known, but his death was announced in the Wrexham Advertiser on 15 May 1858
DEATHS. EDISBURY On the 7th day of March last, (after a residence of nearly 18 years) at Cassilia,” Sydney, New South Wales, in the 33rd year of his age, William, second son of the late Mr. Thomas Edisbury, currier. Eliza Rowland was William`s sister.
On 21 September 1861 a letter was printed in the Wrexham Advertiser from a William Dale with news of some of the Wrexham people who had gone to Australia, Edward is one of those.
“Allow me to add to your list the following Wrexhamites in South Australia, who are all highly respected and deservedly so. Mr Edward Rowland, late of the Town Hill and High Street, now keeps one of the largest druggist shops in Adelaide, and is doing well”
It`s not known when the family returned home but in 1864 an advert was placed in the Wrexham Advertiser.
TO BUILDERS AND CONTRACTORS. PARTIES wishing to contract for the completion of a PARTLY ERECTED VILLA near Offa Terrace, belonging to Edward Rowland, Esq., may inspect the plans and specifications on and after the 15th inst., at the office of the undersigned, to whom sealed tenders must be sent in before the 1st proximo. WM. TURNER, Architect and Surveyor, Queen-street, Wrexham. 7th February, 1864.
By 1871 Edward, Eliza and daughter Eliza were in Bryn Offa, he was now a retired chemist.
On 6 December 1873 a notice was placed in the Wrexham Advertiser concerning the condition of the Terrace.
WREXHAM RURAL SANITARY AUTHORITY. A meeting of the above authority was held at the Workhouse on Thursday, and there were present:—Mr Low (in the chair), Mr Whalley, M.P., Mr T. P. Jones Parry, Mr H. W. Meredith, Mr Lester, Mr Eyton-Jones, Mr W. Davies.
Mr Ed. Rowland attended the committee for the purpose of referring to the drainage at Offa Terrace. There were 25 houses, and the whole of the sewage ran into a field at the back, and accumulated near his house. There had been a number of cases of fever in the terrace.
“Offa Terrace ran from Bryn Offa towards the school , it was demolished to make way for the new housing estate. Bryn Offa was bought about 1956 by the RAFA and became their clubhouse”
Eliza died at Bryn Offa on 6 September 1879, she was aged 59. Edward and his daughter were still there in 1881. They left Bryn Offa and moved to Fernbank, Grove Road where he died on 16 March 1889 aged 71.
In June 1890 his daughter Eliza married Edward Eyland Rogers. The marriage took place in St Giles , it was reported in the Wrexham Advertiser on 14 June 1890.
On Tuesday morning, at eleven o’clock, the Parish Church of Wrexham was filled with a large congregation assembled to witness the marriage of Mr Edward Eyland Rogers, Garfield Villa, and partner in the firm of Messrs Rogers and Jackson, ironmongers, High Street and Chester Street, to Miss Eliza (Lizzie) Rowland, daughter of the late Edward Rowland, of Grove-road. The couple only had one child, Nora Adeliza who was born in 1891.
Edward died on 24 July 1895, Eliza died in Rhos on Sea in 1906 and was buried in Llandrillo.
Also remembered on the grave is their son Edward Edisbury Rowland who was born 14 December 1854, Kensington, Adelaide.
He went to Liverpool by 1871 and at the age of 16 was a chemists apprentice for Richard Aspinall. By 1881 he had moved to Chorlton cum Hardy where he was an assistant at the Medical Hall on Leigh Lane.
Later that year he married Elizabeth Mary A Verrall in Hanover Square, London. Elizabeth died and in 1891 Edward was a widower with two young children, Ethel M 8 and Frank E aged 2, he was still living in Hackney.
Later that year Edward remarried to Emma Makin, and by 1901 they had a daughter Winifred. Edward died on 8 February 1909 at 36 Northwold Road, Clapton and was buried in Asney Park Cemetery, Stanford Hill, London. Emma died in 1930 and is buried with Edward.
