WILLIAM STOKES c 1821 – 1903
John Stokes was born about 1784 he was the son of Edward Stokes a bricksetter who died in 1828; in his will he names his son John as beneficiary/executor.
Mary Phoenix was born 28 February 1789 and baptised at Chester Street Congregational, Wrexham, was the daughter of James Phoenix and Elizabeth Price.
John Stokes and Mary Phoenix were married 18 April 1814 at St Giles Wrexham, John was a bricklayer, and both were able to sign their own names.
Edward Stokes born about 1820 and William Stokes born about 1821 were brothers, they were both born in Wrexham and were the sons of John Stokes and Mary Phoenix who were also from Wrexham. His parents moved to Liverpool by 1841 and were living in Toxteth. John was a bricklayer, Edward was an apprentice bricklayer and William was an apprentice broker.
In 1851, John 67 and Mary 65 are in Toxteth Park, Liverpool, John and his son Edward are both brick layers, another younger brother Nathan is with them, he is a coach maker.
Some of John and Mary’s other sons are also in Liverpool, in the St Barnabus district.
John 35 is a provision dealer, William 28 is a book keeper and Charles 26 is a coachmaker.
John died in Liverpool in 1854, he was aged 69 and within 4 years Mary who was now blind had moved back to Wrexham, she was a “proprietor of houses” so probably John and her sons had built for themselves. She is living on Penybryn with 3 of her sons, William is now an accountant, John is a grocer and Edward is a bricklayer
In 1871 Mary, William and Edward are still in Penybryn, where she died in 1879 aged 90.
William and Edward are still not married; Edward has given up bricklaying and is living on an income from rents. There was an area of Penybryn called Stokes Court.
They have two nieces living with them who were both born in Liverpool, Emma 24 and Rhoda 17.
Edward died at 13 Penybryn on 1 February 1885 aged 65. William and his nieces moved to 4 Percy Road, and then to 82 Erddig Terrace where he died 3 November 1903. He was buried with his brother Edward.
William was a wealthy man, he made a will and left effects worth £7174 9s 11d.
