JAMES, Alyn Reginald – Gresford War Memorial

Written and researched by Mavis Williams

Alyn Reginald James was born circa 1894 and was baptised at All Saint’s Church, Gresford on the 21st November 1894, the son of Richard Percy & Mabel Harriet James (nee Wheeler).   They had married in the June quarter of 1892 (Hampstead       Vol.1a  Page 1232).

The 1901 census see the family living at “The Beeches,” Gresford, Denbighshire and the first appearance of Alyn Reginald James.   Head of the household was Richard Percy James, 42, Solicitor and Employer, born Wrexham, Denbighshire.   His wife Mabel Harriet, 30 had been born in Southsea Hants.   Their first born son was Richard I., 8, then Alyn R., 6.   Three daughters followed, Margaret M., 5, Dorothy H.,3 and baby Barbara, 4 months old.   There were 5 servants in the house as well, 1 cook and 2 housemaids as well as 2 Nurses  in particular Ann J. Miles*, 18 and Nellie Holmes, age 17, both born Gresford.

*See the Richard Miles story.

Alyn Reginald James is next seen at a School on the 1911 census as a boarder at Luptons House, Sedburgh, Yorkshire – West Riding.   He was 16 years old.

Alyn Reginald James in the UK, Soldiers Died in the Great War, 1914-1919 tells us that his rank was Captain, Household Cavalry and Cavalry of the Line, Battalion: Denbighshire Yeomanry and R.F.  Killed in Action

Alyn Reginald James in the British Army WWI Medal Rolls Index Cards, 1914-1920 tells us that he was in a few regiments and then the Royal Flying Corps:-

Denbighshire Yeomanry, Denbigh Yeomanry Territorial Force, and RFC

Regimental Number:      551, 551, 551

Appld. Comm. 29th December 1914

He was also awarded the Victory & British War Medals .

I also believe that his father applied for his medals in March 1922 and possibly had them circa 30th November 1922.    On the reverse of the card was written:- Father – R.P. JAMES, Esq. Kilhendre, Gresford. N. Wales.

From this card I suspect that Alyn Reginald had pursued a Military career as he applied for a Commission or was granted it on the 29th December 1914

Alyn Reginald James in the England & Wales, National Probate Calendar (Index of Wills and Administrations), 1858-1966, 1973-1995:-

JAMES, Alyn Reginald of Kilhendre, Gresford, Denbighshire a Captain in the Denbighshire Yeomanry attached to the Royal Flying Corps died on or since 24th March 1918 in France.   Administration St. Asaph 7th January to Richard Percy JAMES, Solicitor.    Effects £200 14s 6d.

His brother Richard Farrer James was also in the War, luckily he survived.
