William Oliver MINISTER

IN LOVING MEMORY OF WILLIAM OLIVER MINISTER. NATIONAL PROVINCIAL BANK, WREXHAM. ELDEST SON OF THE LATE CAPTAIN MINISTER, 77TH REGIMENT, OF ALMA GRANGE, NEAR CARDIGAN. WHO DIED ON THE 11TH OF JANUARY 1915 AGED 47 YEARS.

William Oliver Minister was baptised on 12 April 1867 at Llandygwydd, Cardigan. He was the son of William Minister and Mary Elizabeth Thomas.  He lived at Alma Grange for much of his  younger life, his father was an Army Officer and a wealthy man . Alma Grange was built in 1870 by William Woodward, Caerleon House, for Captain William Minister who was born in Blakefield, Norfolk. He was a veteran of the Crimean War, having been present at the Battle of the Alma and the taking of Sebastopol. In 1871 William Minister 54 retired captain from 50th regiment, his wife Mary and four children lived there.  The family were still there in 1881.

Alma Grange

By 1891 William Oliver had left home and was a bank accountant in Paddington. His father was still in his home, but later moved to Cambray House, Carmarthen.

On 6th June 1896 Captain William Minister, late of Alma Grange, died aged 80. His effects at probate were £123 8s 4d.

William Oliver moved to Spalding by 1901 and still in the same job.  By 1911 he was in Wrexham and living at 27 Spring Road which were small apartments let out by Fanny Perks. In another apartment was Frank Sisson who was a solicitor.  William Oliver was a bank carter at the National Provincial Bank. It was built about 1876 and still stands at the top of Bank Street, which before then was known as Kenrick Street.   It was succeeded by The National Westminster, which moved out in the 1990s and the building now houses the Halifax Bank.

William Oliver never married and died on 11 January 1915  at Peel Villa, 46 Spring Road, Wrexham.
